Los Angeles- Based Organization Looks to Re-supply Troops Spiritually
Relics of military patron saints being sent to bases worldwide
LOS ANGELES, April 25 /Christian Newswire/ -- With US troops deployed around the world on a variety of missions, American personnel are receiving a spiritual boost from the Los Angeles-based Apostolate for Holy Relics (AHR).
Working with the Archdiocese for the Military Services USA in Washington DC, the AHR is sending relics of the Catholic saints considered patrons of the armed forces, to bases around the world, allowing troops at home and abroad a moment of prayerful reflection.
The relics of Saints Anthony of Padua (patron of sailors), Therese of Lisieux, patron of pilots and air crews, and Ignatius of Loyola, patron of soldiers, began a tour military bases with an opening celebration at the Archdiocese for Military Services Chapel at 1025 Michigan Avenue NE Washington, DC 20017 on April 22nd at 6:00 pm. The event was presided over by Archbishop Broglio.
"Under pressure and in circumstances that most civilians cannot even imagine, our troops have to deal not only with the constant reality of death but - in addition - with the ups and downs of life as well," said AHR President Thomas Serafin. "Our hope is that the visit of these relics will allow our troops a special moment of prayerful reflection and will give them a sense that we at home stand behind them in prayer as well as in word."
More than a dozen stops are currently scheduled and more are being added as the relics are requested by bases worldwide. A complete schedule is available at www.relictour.org.
The tour is being co-sponsored and funded by the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of St. George.
The Apostolate for Holy Relics is a California non- profit organization that has previously organized tours of relics throughout the United States, drawing hundreds of thousands of people.

Oorah! Judge orders liens on Phelps church building, law office

A federal judge in Maryland on Thursday ordered liens on the Westboro Baptist Church building and the Phelps-Chartered Law office.
If the case presided over by U.S. District Court Judge Richard D. Bennett is upheld by an appeals court, the church, at 3701 S.W. 12th, and the office building, at 1414 S.W. Topeka Blvd., could be obtained by the court and sold, with the proceeds being applied toward $5 million in damages Bennett imposed on church members for picketing a military funeral.
The $5 million penalty is the result of a lawsuit filed against three of the church's principals by Albert Snyder, the father of Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew A. Snyder, whose funeral was picketed by church members.

Early Withdrawal of American Troops in Iraq would lead to 'the Extermination of Christians and Christianity in Iraq'
WASHINGTON, August 8 /Christian Newswire/ -- This statement was made by Iraqi Christian leaders to a prayer delegation, led by the Christian Defense Coalition that visited Baghdad at the end of July.
Members of that delegation met with the Iraqi Prime Minister, Cabinet members and persecuted Christian leaders. (See photos)
The Christian Defense Coalition says that America cannot allow 2,000 years of Christianity to be exterminated from Iraq and that religious liberty must be protected for all faiths and traditions.
The group calls on Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid to give assurances that Christians and all religious minorities will be protected in Iraq.
Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, Director of the Christian Defense Coalition, comments, "Perhaps the most emotional and moving moment of our recent trip to Baghdad was when our delegation met with Iraqi Christian leaders." When asked, what would happen if American troops would leave early? Their response was powerful and chilling. The Christian leaders simply said, "If the Americans would withdraw early, it would lead to the extermination of Christians and Christianity in Iraq."
Our government cannot allow 2,000 years of Christianity to be exterminated in Iraq. Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid must lay out a clear plan and agenda detailing how religious freedom and liberty will be protected for all faiths and traditions in Iraq.
My fear is that an early withdrawal will lead to genocide and bloodshed for religious minorities; especially Christians. It would be a betrayal of human rights and a trampling of American values if congressional leadership would allow this to happen.

Earning a desk
In September of 2005, on the first day of school, Martha Cothren, a social studies school teacher at Robinson High School in Little Rock, did something not to be forgotten. On the first day of school, with permission of the school superintendent, the principal and the building supervisor, she took all of the desks out of the classroom.
The kids came into first period, they walked in, there were no desks. They obviously looked around and said, "Ms. Cothren, where's our desk?" And she said, "You can't have a desk until you tell me how you earn them."
They thought, "Well, maybe it's our grades."
"No," she said.
"Maybe it's our behavior."
And she told them, "No, it's not even your behavior."
And so they came and went in the first period, still no desks in the classroom. Second period, same thing. Third period. By early afternoon television news crews had gathered in Ms. Cothren's class to find out about this crazy teacher who had taken all the desks out of the classroom. The last period of the day, Martha Cothren gathered her class. They were at this time sitting on the floor around the sides of the room. And she says, "Throughout the day no one has really understood how you earn the desks that sit in this classroom ordinarily." She said, "Now I'm going to tell you."
Martha Cothren went over to the door of her classroom and opened it, and as she did 27 U.S. veterans, wearing their uniforms, walked into that classroom, each one carrying a school desk. And they placed those school desks in rows, and then they stood along the wall. And by the time they had finished placing those desks, those kids for the first time I think perhaps in their lives understood how they earned those desks.
Martha said, "You don't have to earn those desks. These guys did it for you. They put them out there for you, but it's up to you to sit here responsibly to learn, to be good students and good citizens, because they paid a price for you to have that desk, and don't ever forget it."
